Truth is I saw first-hand the devastating aftermath of Sandy's wrath. Here in New York, as well as NJ, there were obviously thousands of people who had their lives impacted by the storm. Pre-Sandy life...and post-Sandy.
Sandy wreaked its havoc on the weekend of October 29th. Following the storm, innumerable groups attempted to send 'relief'. As a 'BBQ guy', I, along with several other like-minded smokers wanted to 'help'. The question was, "In a situation so devastating, how could one person possibly help??" Well, my friends, the answer was simple:
OPERATION BBQ RELIEF
I hooked up with Dana Reed from 3 Men and a Babyback via Facebook. The week prior a crew of OBR had been to Hoboken. Additionally, OBR was serving THOUSANDS of meals in Long Island and other parts of NJ.
The staging area for the Staten Island relief was the Oakwood Heights VFW on 575 Mill Road. I showed up knowing two other 'smokers' would be on site. Those units were provided by Mike Rosenthal from Dr. Pearls Medicinal Smoke and Brian Olthoff from Lazy River Barbecue (both out of New Joisey). Other QUE' MASTERS on hand to donate time were Mark Azzarello also from Dr. Pearl's team, Robert Mansfield from Team Chicken Chokers (love the name -- there is NO PLACE for POLITICAL CORRECTNESS in the world of BBQ!) and Patrick Paquette who came all the way DOWN from Cape Cod with his pellet droppers!! I hope Patrick will one day show the GranPappy how to 'throw a tin' and catch a rock fish or two in 'da wash'! (I will OMIT my Patriots/Jets references here...due to the Thanksgiving debacle!)
Servin the masses...
Actually, the GranPappy had met most of these guys at various Que' events in the past:
Dana - GranPappy was given a 'grand tour' of the rig this summer
Dr. Mike - judgin SAMS CLUB NJ...and also one of Mike's teammates had 'magic hands' that the GranPappy needed in New Paltz, well, let's not talk about that.
Chicken Rob up at the Hudson Valley Ribfest when TYWBBQ was in desperate need of a fan to dry out the RV carpet...DON'T ASK.
The site in Staten Island is called the GUYON RESCUE or you can visit on FACEBOOK. (CLICK on those LINKS!! <--no! go back and CLICK ON THEM!)
LemmeTELLYAsumthin'...the GranPappy had only been to Staten Island twice in his life (Rolling Thunder 2) - the day I spent there changed my perspective on a LOT of things. Staten Island grows STRONG PEOPLE. The folks 'runnin the proverbial show' are community volunteers!! This was a 'do it yourself OR it ain't gettin' done!' scenario. These people are unbelievable. There was NO government help~
Mill Ave - the SURGE carried the homes over the marsh
Lenny was in charge...movin' and shakin. THEN, along comes a woman (sounds like a love story!) with a car FULL of chicken, foil, cupcakes and Moonshine (wait!! chicken, cupcakes, MOONSHINE...this IS a LOVE STORY!)...LAURA KUKA-VALOIS. I was only there for about 13 hours, the others mentioned spent days (and went BACK for Thanksgiving weekend!). However, by keeping updated via FACEBOOK the GranPappy can see that ...LAURA has been LIVING the GUYON RESCUE. Along with her family BIG ANT...and lil' ANT, they have GIVEN so that others may receive.
OBR...make a tax-free donation today
Gettin back to what I mentioned earlier...the MRS. PAPPY and family were 'inconvenienced', these people in Staten Island, Long Island and NJ are DEVASTATED.
Take a moment and ask yourself, "What HAVE I DONE? or What CAN I DO? to help someone in the near future." It can be as easy as asking the local food pantry what they need, Toys for Tots or maybe giving away a bag of your children's old toys to the needy.
I ENCOURAGE anyone who would like to help GUYON RESCUE in ANY WAY (physical or financial) to contact the GranPappy (ashkickinQ@gmail.com) OR any of the aforementioned individuals.
Greatest Country in the World.
Yours in SMOKE~~~
